Corn farmers work hard to be good stewards of the land and environment. New technologies and farming practices allow farmers to grow more corn on less farmland, all while conserving the natural resources vital to the environment.

The Field to Market 2012 Environmental and Socioeconomic Indicators Report analyzed sustainability trends from 1980 to 2011 at the national scale for U.S. corn and other crops.

Corn improved on all measures of per bushel resource efficiency,

  • irrigation water applied (-53%)
  • energy use (-44%)
  • greenhouse gas emission (-36%)
  • land use (-30%)
  • soil erosion (-67%)
